Male Archetype Test
Find the archetype that leads you and the shadow that takes over under pressure. Then see where it sits next to the King, the Warrior, the Magician and the Lover.
A male archetype test asks which pattern drives a man: order and responsibility, courage, insight, or closeness. Ours is the main Archemap test. It places you among twelve archetypes, names the shadow that takes over under stress, and, if your leader is the Ruler, Hero, Magician or Lover, shows which of Moore and Gillette’s four masculine archetypes it echoes.
What this test measures, and what it does not
The questions are the same for everyone, and men land on every one of the twelve archetypes. The test does not score the King, Warrior, Magician and Lover as a separate model. No validated test of those four exists; quizzes about them are written by their authors and work as mirrors, not measurements.
What we can say honestly: four of our twelve archetypes sit close to the four, so your result shows how much of that energy leads in you, and the shadow tells you how it goes wrong under pressure.
What your result shows
Your leading archetype
The one of twelve that drives your decisions most, with a match score from your answers.
Your shadow
The pattern that takes over when you are tired, cornered or afraid of losing control.
Its masculine echo
If you lead with the Ruler, Hero, Magician or Lover, the table below shows which of the four it sits next to.
Where to read next
Each archetype and shadow has its own page, and the King, Warrior, Magician and Lover each have theirs.
Our twelve archetypes and the four masculine ones
An echo of one theme, not an equivalence. The other eight archetypes, from the Sage to the Jester, have no counterpart among the four.
| Archemap archetype | Closest of the four | Our shadow | What they share |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Ruler | King | The Tyrant | Order, responsibility, a realm to look after. Our shadow carries the same name Moore and Gillette give the King’s active pole. |
| The Hero | Warrior | The Fallen | Courage and effort for a goal. In their model the Hero is a boyhood form; in ours it is a mature archetype, which is why it sits here. |
| The Magician | Magician | The Manipulator | Insight, knowledge, transformation. Our Manipulator is very near their Detached Manipulator. |
| The Lover | Lover | The Obsessed | Passion, beauty, closeness. Our Obsessed is intensity without limits, much like their Addicted Lover. |

Is there a separate archetype test for men?
Not here, and we think that is the honest choice. Archetypes are patterns, not genders: men lead with the Caregiver and women with the Ruler all the time. This page uses the same 42-question test as everyone else and helps men read the result next to the masculine archetypes.
What are the four masculine archetypes?
The King, the Warrior, the Magician and the Lover, from Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette’s 1990 book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. Each has a mature form and a shadow with two poles. Our masculine archetypes guide covers all four.
Does this test tell me if I am a King, Warrior, Magician or Lover?
Not directly. It measures twelve archetypes of our own model. Four of them, the Ruler, Hero, Magician and Lover, echo the four, so if one of those leads in you, you will see which masculine archetype it sits next to. If you lead with another archetype, such as the Sage or the Explorer, the four are simply not your main story.
What is a masculine shadow?
The way a strong pattern goes wrong. Moore and Gillette give each archetype an active and a passive shadow, such as the Tyrant and the Weakling for the King. Our test names one shadow per archetype, the one that takes over under pressure, for example the Tyrant for the Ruler or the Fallen for the Hero.
How long does it take and is it free?
42 questions, about 5 to 10 minutes. The core result, your leading archetype and your shadow, is free and needs no signup.
Is it scientific?
It is a self-reflection tool built on Jung and Carol Pearson’s twelve archetypes and developed by Archemap, not a clinical instrument. Treat the result as a well-made mirror. Our methodology page explains how the scoring works.
Archemap is a self-reflection tool built on Jungian ideas and later archetype research. It is not therapy, counselling or a clinical diagnosis.
Which archetype leads you?
Forty-two questions, about ten minutes, and a clear name for the pattern you run on and the one that takes over when it gets hard.
