Anima & Animus Test

Your soul and your spirit may want different things. See which face each one leads with, and the combination they make in you.

How it works

  • Each scene has four answers. Pick the one closest to what you really do, not what you would like to do.
  • Some scenes are about good days, some about pressure. Both count.
  • There are no right answers: every option is one face of the soul or the spirit.

What this test reads

In Jung’s psychology the anima is the soul and the animus the spirit, and everyone carries both. Jung, Emma Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz described four faces of each. The soul’s faces: Hearth (Eve), Muse (Helen), Devotion (Mary), Wisdom (Sophia). The spirit’s faces: Strength (power), Will (deed), Voice (word), Purpose (meaning).

The test shows which face your soul and your spirit lead with, which face takes over under pressure, and the combination the two make. The faces are a mix, not a ladder: none is higher than another.

Developed by Archemap: an original test and scoring method, built on the work of Carl Jung, Emma Jung, Marie-Louise von Franz and their successors. Read more in anima and animus.

Anima test and animus test in one

Anima test: Eros and your soul’s four faces

Half of the scenes read your soul, the anima, which Jung tied to Eros, the principle of relatedness: how you love, care, feel and dream. It leads with Hearth, Muse, Devotion or Wisdom, the faces Jung called Eve, Helen, Mary and Sophia.

Animus test: Logos and your spirit’s four faces

The other half reads your spirit, the animus, which Jung tied to Logos, the principle of judgement and meaning: how you act, decide, speak and choose a direction. It leads with Strength, Will, Voice or Purpose, the four forms Emma Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz described as power, deed, word and meaning.

Questions about the test

Is this an anima test or an animus test?

Both. Jung’s idea is that everyone carries a soul and a spirit, so the test reads both: the anima (soul, Eros) in half of the scenes and the animus (spirit, Logos) in the other half. Your result is the combination the two make.

What is an anima test?

An anima test looks at the soul side of the psyche in Jung’s sense: feeling, closeness, images and what moves you. This one shows which of the soul’s four faces you lead with and which one takes over under pressure.

What is an animus test?

An animus test looks at the spirit side: will, conviction, voice and direction. This one shows which of the spirit’s four faces you lead with, and how it behaves when things go wrong.

Is the test only for men or only for women?

No. Jung first tied the anima to men and the animus to women, but most later Jungians read the anima as soul and the animus as spirit, both present in everyone. The test is the same for everyone and does not use gender in scoring.

Is it based on Jung?

Yes. The faces come from Carl Jung (Eve, Helen, Mary, Sophia), Emma Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz (power, deed, word, meaning). The questions and the scoring method are Archemap’s own, developed after researching Jung’s writings and the post-Jungian literature.

How long does it take and is it free?

32 short scenes, about 7 minutes, free and without signup. Your answers are kept in your browser, so you can close the page and continue later.

Is this a psychological diagnosis?

No. It is a tool for self-reflection inspired by Jungian psychology, not a clinical assessment.
